Developed by the Oklahoma Geriatric Education Center, this workshop is intended to provide geriatric sensitivity training to healthcare and eldercare professionals. Through active learning simulations and small group discussion, participants begin to see how the challenges of disease may impact the autonomy of older adults and their ability to live independently. Together they consider solutions and supports currently available to elders and brainstorm other potentially successful interventions. Participants are led through five simulation stations that lead them to discover the difficulties that disease can cause for older adults. The facilitator wanders among the groups guiding them to insights about how they can assist the older adults in their care while maintaining as much of the adults independence as possible. The activity is followed by a lecture about the normal changes of aging and the sensory, cognitive and functional changes caused by disease.
This program provides 2 FREE CEU CREDITS for Social Workers, Registered Nurses, Nursing Home Administrators, Personal Care Home Administrators, Physical Therapists and Occupational Therapists.
